Why do I need a reference check?

Sometimes references will have nothing but bad things to say about you. Perhaps they felt threatened by you when you worked there, or maybe they’re worried that you’re going to be competing against them in the future. Other times, references will give neutral, non-committal answers, because they don’t want it to get back to you that they dissed you. But lack of enthusiasm can be just as damaging to your chances, if another candidate’s reference is full of positive comments.

Our goal in creating this website is to help you learn who will speak highly of you and who will not. Best case scenario, you’ll discover that the references you give are big fans of you and your work. Worst case scenario, you can choose someone else as a reference, or perhaps even correct any dissatisfaction or misunderstandings that your current reference may have.

What our customers say

“I found out from a friend that my old supervisor was trash-talking me after I got laid off. I had no idea he felt that way, and had been using him as a reference for my job applications. I wish I had known sooner.”

“One applicant’s former boss told me he was super smart but unreliable. That’s not good. Who knows how many jobs he applied for and might have gotten, only to have his reference bad-mouth him and kill his chances.”

“I remember checking references on an agency pitch a few years ago, and the client whose name they gave me absolutely trashed them. She was completely unimpressed and was looking around for a new agency herself.”
